Dorothy Mae Sudik
Dorothy Mae Sudik, 89, of (North) Philipsburg, died Saturday, December 21, 2024 surrounded by loving family at the residence of her daughter and son-in-law Melinda Joy and Aaron Gustkey in Philipsburg.
Dorothy was born on May 3, 1935 in (North) Philipsburg, a daughter of the late Andrew and Anna (Sura) Czap.
Following graduation from Philipsburg High School in 1953, she worked at the former General Cigar plant in (North) Philipsburg until she married Nicholas “Nick” Sudik on August 3, 1960 where she began her most successful career as a homemaker.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by four sisters (and respective spouses): Mary Myers and her husband Charles, Anna Williams and her husband Edward, Helen Beveridge and her first husband, Harmon “Bo” Myers and her second husband Ernest Beveridge, Margaret Czap and Verna Cazp. Two brothers (and respective spouses) John Czap and wife Shirley, George Czap and wife Greta, a sister-in-law Joselyn Czap, brother-in-law Calvin Shields and brother Andrew Czap.
She is survived by a brother, Michael Czap of Philipsburg, PA and a sister, Nancy Shields of State College, PA.
Also surviving are her children Mark David Sudik and wife Marie of Alexandria, VA. and Melinda Joy “MJ” Gustkey and her husband Aaron of Philipsburg, PA; Five grandchildren and one great grandchild. Angela Luchini, husband Brian and great grandson Dominic of Pittsburgh, PA, Stephen Sudik, of Arlington, VA, and Nathan, Ben, and Emily Gustkey, all of Philipsburg, plus many nieces and nephews.
Dorothy was a lifetime member of St. John’s Orthodox Church in Hawk Run, PA where she served as Financial Secretary for many years. She also belonged to St John’s ACRY Chapter 41 and the Carpathian Club.
She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary to VFW Post 3450 in Philipsburg where Memorial Day and Veteran’s Day were very special holidays to her. In 1988, she was honored as “Woman of the Year” by the Philipsburg Business and Professional Woman’s Club.
For 50 years, Dorothy was a fixture at the Centre County Grange Fair in Centre Hall where she helped her sisters and nieces run “Helen’s Perogie Place”
Finally, Baba could always be found in the stands watching her grandchildren play games. She was their number one fan.
The family will receive friends at Dorothy’s residence on Loch Lomond Road in Philipsburg on Friday, December 27, 2024, from 4 to 9pm. A Panachida (memorial service ) will begin at 7pm.
The Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, December 28, 2024, beginning at 10am, at St. John the Baptist Orthodox Church, with Fr. Paul Bigelow and Fr. Deacon Emil Gulick, celebrants.
Interment will immediately follow the service in St John’s Cemetery.
