Carl J. Martin
Carl J. Martin, 86, of Pittsburgh, Pa., formerly of Chester Hill, died October 14, 2024, at Good Samaritan Hospice House, in Wexford, Pa., after a long battle with cancer.
Carl was born on October 3, 1938, in Brisbin, Pa, a son of the late James “Jim” and Bessie (Albright) Martin.
Carl served with the US Army from 1959-1961; primarily assigned to Ft. Slocum, New York. Following his military service, he attended the Machinist Training program at the Centre County Vocational Technical School, in Bellefonte, Pa., graduating in 1967. He was employed as a Machinist in the Fuel Sciences Department at Penn State University, University Park Campus, where he worked closely with graduate students performing research for over 30 years until his retirement. He was a member of the Local Teamster’s Union.
Carl enjoyed spending time with his family, friends, pets, hunting, fishing, traveling and was an avid Penn State Football fan.
Carl was a Life Member of the B.P.O. Elks Lodge and Country Club, #1173, Philipsburg; a former member of the Shriners & Masonic organizations; and a former social member of the Philipsburg VFW Post #3450.
Carl was married on September 11, 1965, in Philipsburg, to the former Betty J. McMullen who survives at home.
Carl is also survived by one daughter, Jacqueline “Jackie” Metzger and her husband, Jacob “Jake” Metzger, of Pittsburgh; three sisters: Eleanor Yarger-Hassinger, of (Sanborn) RD Houtzdale, Lois Lukens, of Smoke Run and Joan Walstrom, of Brisbin; one brother, Dennis “Denny” Martin, and his wife, Linda, of Ginter; a sister-in-law, Sharon Martin, of Hawk Run; and numerous other extended family members.
In addition to his parents, Carl was preceded in death by one brother, his “best buddy,” Thomas “Tom” Martin and one sister, Joyce Cartwright.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, November 2, 2024, at 10:30 am, at the Beezer-Heath Funeral & Cremation Services, 719 E. Spruce St., Philipsburg, with Pastor Laura Kyler, officiating.
A visitation will be held at the funeral home on Saturday from 9:30 am until the time of the service.
Inurnment with Military Honors will be in Philipsburg Cemetery.
Following the services at the cemetery, the family has extended an invitation for their guests to join them for a luncheon in honor of Carl at the Philipsburg Elks Lodge and County Club.
