Dorothy “Dottie” Avanell Curtis

Dorothy “Dottie” Avanell Curtis, 100, of Philipsburg, died peacefully on Friday, November 7th, in her residence at Heritage Ridge Senior Living Center at Windy Hill.

Dottie was born on January 7th, 1925, in the neighborhood of Barrett in Clearfield. She was the daughter of the late Herman and Mable (Gill) Maney of Pottersdale, Pa.

As a child of the “Greatest Generation,” she joined the ranks of 18,000 other women who aided World War II efforts working at Picatinny Arsenal in New Jersey. As a young businesswoman, she helped to open and operate The Flying Saucer in Chester Hill. Later, as a beautician, she opened Dottie’s Beauty Shop in downtown Philipsburg. Dottie was also a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Philipsburg.

Dottie was preceded in death by her former husband, Owen W. Curtis, two sisters, Molly Taylor and Leujean Dunlap, two brothers, Herman and Edward Maney, and a son-in-law, Timothy Foreman.

She is survived by two sisters, Joan Popoff of Erie, Pa, and Donna Brindle of Louisville, Ky; two daughters, Sharon Foreman and Darlene Kizer (husband Randy); four grandchildren: Timothy Foreman (wife Melissa), Kelly (Foreman) Matsko (husband Joseph), Jennifer (Kizer) McCall (husband Mike) and Carrie (Kizer) Eytalis (husband Ben); and nine great-grandchildren Rio (husband Justin), Alex, Brinley, Bradley, DJ (husband Stephen), Curtis (fiancé Alexandra), Sydney, Madison and Dana.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, November 15, 2025, at 4 pm, at the Beezer-Heath Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 719 E. Spruce Street, Philipsburg, with Lay Speaker Fred Ferguson, officiating. The family will receive guests at the funeral home on Saturday from 3 pm until the time of the service.

Interment will be in Philipsburg Cemetery.
