Walter M. Swoope, Jr.

Walter M. Swoope, Jr., 73, of Philipsburg, died Tuesday, January 30, 2018, at his residence.

Born on April 21, 1944, in Philipsburg, he was a son of Walter M. Swoope, Sr. and Mary Louise (Fryberger) Swoope, both of whom preceded him in death.

After completing primary and middle school in Philipsburg, Walter attended the Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts. Those close to Walter knew him to be a highly learned and self-educated man.

He was a dedicated member of St. Thomas of Canterbury Anglican Church, Philipsburg.

Walter restored and managed numerous properties in Philipsburg; beginning with the Lorraine House on South Centre Street. One of the most prominent and notable of these restorations is the Finberg Building on Philipsburg’s Front Street. Most recently, he was in the process of restoring the former Taylor’s Hotel at the corner of Front and Laurel Streets.

He was a member and supporter of the Philipsburg B.P.O. Elks and Country Club #1173. Throughout his career he served on a variety of boards and held offices with the Philipsburg Historical Foundation, Rowland Theatre and the Philipsburg Main Street Program. He will remembered as a much appreciated local philanthropist. Walter had a deep passion for Philipsburg and its historical legacy as illustrated by his extensive collection of historical memorabilia and service to his community.

Walter’s passion for local history carried over to his hobbies and strong interest in his family’s genealogy. He was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution. Among his many interests were classic cars and early radio and recording equipment. He also had a great appreciation for opera; more specifically, he was an ardent “buff” of “the Met,” The Metropolitan Opera of New York City.

Walter will always be fondly remembered for his even temperament, his wry sense of humor and his thoughtfulness and consideration for his many friends.

Walter is survived by a sister, Elizabeth “Beth” (Swoope) Sweetow, of San Francisco; and numerous extended family members.

Visitation will be on Monday, February 5, 2018 from 6 to 8 pm at the Beezer-Heath Funeral Home, 719 E. Spruce Street, Philipsburg.
