Charlene H. Shimel

Charlene H. Shimel, 97, formerly of Philipsburg, died Friday, January 20, 2023, at Epworth Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center, Tyrone.

Charlene was born on July 12, 1925, in Bellefonte, a daughter of the late James and Bessie (Kreidler) Pettingill.

She was a graduate of the Bellefonte High School.

Charlene was married to Milfred L. Shimel, who preceded her in death in April 1973.

She was employed during her working career at the former Philipsburg Riverside Market. She was the Deli Manager at the time of her retirement.

Charlene was an active lifelong member of the Trinity United Methodist Church in Philipsburg. Prior to her death, she had the distinction of being the eldest living member of the congregation.

She is survived by two sons, Barry W. Shimel and his wife, Sandra, of Philipsburg and Brad A. Shimel, Esq. and his wife, Dorothy, of Florence, Mass.; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; and numerous other extended family members.

She was preceded in death by four sisters and five brothers in addition to her parents and husband, Milfred.

She was the last of her generation.

There will be no public visitation or funeral service per Charlene’s request.

A private interment was held at Philipsburg Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made in Charlene’s memory to the charity of the donor’s choice.
