Charlotte Mae Hughes

Charlotte Mae Hughes, 80, of Dothan, Alabama and formerly of Philipsburg, died Monday, January 2, 2023, at the residence of her daughter, Jennifer Culver, in Headland, Alabama.

Charlotte was born on September 28, 1942, in Philipsburg, a daughter of the late Raymond and Alice (DeAngelo) Dinant.

Charlotte was a graduate of the former Philipsburg High School. She was a past member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Philipsburg.

Charlotte was married on May 4, 1967, to Samuel L. Hughes, who preceded her in death on December 9, 1999.

Early in her working career, she was employed at the former (North) Philipsburg General Cigar plant. When the plant closed and moved their operations to Alabama, Charlotte and her husband relocated to Dothan, Alabama. She was promoted to supervisor and continued with General Cigar (now known as Swedish Match) until her retirement.

While living in Dothan, she was an active member of the Cloverdale United Methodist Church. As part of her church activities, she would visit and deliver communion to the sick and the shut-ins. She was also a volunteer for the Dothan area Meals on Wheels program.

Among her favorite pastimes, she enjoyed playing dominoes and spending time with her church family.

Charlotte was preceded in death by a daughter, Stacey Delfosse and a granddaughter, Wynter Bella Caesar, in addition to her parents and husband.

She is survived by four children: Gregory “Greg” Hughes and his wife, Karen, of (Troy Hill) RD Philipsburg; Jennifer Culver and her husband, Marvin, of Headland, Alabama; Cindy Newberry and her husband, Allen, of (Juniata) Altoona; and Richard Hughes and his wife, Debra, of Pembroke, Georgia; fifteen grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; one sister, Susan Baney, of West Decatur; two brothers, James Dinant, of West Decatur and Gary Dinant and his wife, Lisa, of (Gearhartville) RD Philipsburg; and numerous other extended family members.

The funeral service will be held at the Beezer-Heath Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 719 E. Spruce St., Philipsburg, on Tuesday, January 10, 2023, at 11am, with Rev. Timothy Richmond, officiating.

A visitation will be held at the funeral home on Monday, January 9, 2023, from 5 to 8 pm; and on Tuesday, from 10am until the time of the service.

Interment will be in IOOF Cemetery, Brisbin.
