George C. “Cappy” Hill

George C. “Cappy” Hill, 75, of Philipsburg, PA died Thursday, July 12, 2012 at his home.

Born on February 6, 1937 in Bigler, PA he was the son of the late George W. Hill and Audrey E. (Bumbarger) Price and step-father, Issac C. “Ike” Price.  He married Rebecca Lucas on October 28, 1989 at the Grace United Methodist Church in Philipsburg, PA.

Mr Hill was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church, Philipsburg, PA.  He was a member and past master of the Moshannon Lodge #0391 Free & Accepted Masons Philipsburg, PA; a member and past High Priest of the Mountain Royal Arch, Chapter #189, Altoona PA; a member and past Thrice Illustrious Master of the Moshannon Council #56 Royal and Select Master Masons; a member and Past Commander of the Mountain Commandery #10, Knights Templar, Altoona, PA; a member of the Jaffa Shrine, Altoona, PA; and a member of the B.P.O Elks #1173, Philipsburg, PA.

Cappy was a charter member, Past President & Vice-President of the Woodchuck Chapter of Trout Unlimited, Philipsburg, PA.  He was instrumental in securing the Cold Stream Watershed Project and the second Act 522 project in Pennsylvania.  He was also instrumental in securing funding for the “Chiller Steps” passive acid mine drainage abatement project on the Cold Stream watershed.  Both of these projects have greatly improved the quality of water in the Cold Stream Dam.  He was a great supporter of the co-operative nursery which had supplied over one million trout to local streams, Cold Stream Dam and numerous sportsmen clubs.  Cappy never sought any recognition – just the personal satisfaction was enough for him.

Mr. Hill was employed as the head of the imagining department of the former Philipsburg State General Hospital in Philipsburg, PA.  He was on the original board of directors and instrumental in re-opening of the former  Philipsburg Area Hospital.  He retired in 1999 from the Quehanna Boot Camp in Karthaus, PA as a labor foreman.

Mr. Hill was a 1955 graduate of the Philipsburg High School in Philipsburg, PA.  In addition, he was a graduate of the Franklin School of Science and Art, Philadelphia, PA.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by: step-daughters, Robin (Reese) Knepp & her husband Michael of (Glass City) RD Philipsburg, PA, Rebecca (Reese) Young & her husband Bryan of Juneau, AK and Rachelle (Reese) Thompson of RD Philipsburg, PA; two sons, Bryan K. Hill & his wife Vicky of Enola, PA and Scott A. Hill & his wife Lydia of Elkton, MD; one sister, Kay C. (Price) Reese of Martinsburg, PA; three grandchildren, Nathan Hill of Enola, PA, Jackson and Seneca Hill of Elkton, MD; four step-grandchildren, Chatham Tully of Juneau, AK and Taylor, Levi and Carly Thompson of RD Philipsburg, PA.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Franklin D. Reese.

A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, July 16, 2012 at the Beezer-Heath Funeral Home, 719 East Spruce St., Philipsburg, PA: with Rev. Mark Thurman officiating.  Burial will be at the Philipsburg Cemetery.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, July 12 from 2:00 until 4:00 p.m. and from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Beezer-Heath Funeral Home.

A Masonic Memorial Service will be held accorded by the Moshannon Lodge #0391, Free & Accepted Masons at 7:00 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
