John E. Gray

John E. Gray, 83, of RD Philipsburg, died Thursday, April 13, 2023, at Mount Nittany Medical Center, State College.

John was born on December 9, 1939, on the Gray family farm in Morris Township, Clearfield County, a son of the late Oliver A. and Cora A. (Myers) Gray.

John was employed with a few area businesses during his working career. Early on in his career, he worked as a H.E. operator for Homer Maney; and as a tri-axle coal truck driver. Later in his career, he was employed as an elevator operator and custodian with the former Presbyterian Home in Philipsburg. He was then employed in the Custodial Services Department at Penn State until health reasons required his retirement.

John was a member of the Moshannon Free Methodist Church. He also served as a Forest Fire Warden’s Assistant with the PA DCNR / Bureau of Forestry.

John was married on May 14, 1961, in Woodland, to the former Doxie Young, who survives at home.

He is also survived by two daughters, Darlene A. and Stephanie A. Gray, both of RD Philipsburg; a son, Robert A. Gray and his wife, Hazel, of RD Philipsburg; one granddaughter, Haley A. Gray, of RD Philipsburg; and numerous other extended family members.

John was preceded in death by one brother, Patrick L. Gray, in addition to his parents. He was the last of his generation.

Among his favorite pastimes, he was an accomplished fisherman and hunter. John was well known throughout the area; and to him, everyone was a friend. His favorite saying in life was “one day at a time.”

Private services will be held at the convenience of the family.
