Betty J. Dobson

Betty J. Dobson, 96, of Philipsburg, died Friday, January 8, 2021, at Windy Hill Village, PSL, Philipsburg.

Betty was born on May 30, 1924, in Philipsburg, the eldest daughter of the late Jennings D. and Bessie Jane (Pomroy) Johnston.

Betty was a 1942 graduate of the former Philipsburg High School. Early in her working career she accepted a position as a bookkeeper for A.O. Curtis. Later in life, she accepted a position as a receptionist at the Geisinger Medical Center in Philipsburg. She would retire from Geisinger in January 1987, after ten years of service.

Early in life, Betty was a member of the former Grace EUB (now Grace United Methodist) Church in Philipsburg. Then in 1950, she moved her membership to the current Trinity United Methodist in Philipsburg. Betty was a very active member of her church. She was involved in the Circle of Faith, prayer chain and numerous other church activities. She was admittedly not the best cook; so, she would usually end up handling “cleanup” duties for church dinners. When she was still able to drive, she would also handle the duties of driving some of the older parishioners to church services. She was also a faithful blood donor and she would work the local Red Cross blood drives. She was also involved for a number of years working on the local election board.

Betty’s favorite pastimes included going on trips and vacations with her family and friends. One of her trips was to a Penn State bowl game; and her family enjoyed an annual trip to the beach.

Betty was married on June 20, 1946, in Mercersburg, (Pa.) to Edward “Ned” Dobson, who preceded her in death on February 26, 1977.

She was also preceded in death by a son, Terence Dobson; and three sisters, Ethel May “Bobbie” Johnston, Louise Johnston and Donna Escott.

She is survived by one daughter, Vicki Butler, of Wellsboro; two granddaughters, Jane Holden and Leigh Twoey; two great-granddaughters, Isla and Olive Twoey; a sister, Theodora J. “Teddy” Conklin, of Philipsburg; a brother-in-law, Robert “Whitey” Escott, of Waynesburg, (Pa.); and numerous other extended family members.

Per Betty’s request, private services will be at the convenience of the family.

Interment will be in Philipsburg Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made in Betty’s memory to the Trinity United Methodist Church, 121 S. Front Street, Philipsburg, Pa 16866.
