Verna Cazp

Verna Cazp, 96, of (North) Philipsburg, affectionately known by her family as “Aunt Nunka,” died Wednesday, May 18, 2022, at her residence surrounded by her loving family.

Verna was born on April 11, 1926, at the family homestead in (North) Philipsburg, a daughter of the late Andrew and Anna (Sura) Czap.

She was a 1943 graduate of the former Philipsburg High School.

Verna was employed with a number of former Philipsburg businesses throughout her working career: including, the A&R Store, Home Furniture Store, Hurwitz Furniture and the Moshannon Valley Cable Company.

Verna was a very devoted member of St. John the Baptist Orthodox Church in Hawk Run. She volunteered countless hours for her church and served in a variety of offices; including, longtime church secretary and treasurer, president of the St. John’s Sr. ACRY and she taught the First Holy Communion Sunday School Class for many years.

Verna was a member of the Carpathian Club, Hawk Run; a longtime secretary for the NOP Club and was a member and past secretary of the VFW Post #3450 Ladies Auxiliary, Philipsburg. Verna was also a member of the former Philipsburg Business & Professional Women’s Club; where she had the honor of being named a “Woman of the Year” award winner.

Verna is survived by two sisters, Dorothy Sudik, of (North) Philipsburg and Nancy Shields, of State College; one brother, Michael Czap and his wife, Josie, of Philipsburg; and numerous loving nieces, nephews and other extended family members.

Although she never married, “Aunt Nunka” was blessed to be named Godmother to 27 children.

Verna was preceded in death by four sisters: Mary Myers, Anna Williams, Helen Beveridge and Margie Czap; three brothers: Andrew, John and George Czap; two sisters-in-law, Shirley and Greta Czap; and six brothers-in-law: Charles Myers, Edward Williams, Harmon “Bo” Myers, Ernest Beveridge, Nicholas Sudik, Jr. and Calvin Shields.

The Funeral Service will be held at St. John the Baptist Orthodox Church, 53 Fulton St., Hawk Run, on Saturday, May 21, 2022, at 10am, with Father Paul Bigelow, officiating, assisted by Father Deacon Emil Gulick.

The family will receive friends at Verna’s home, 889 Loch Lomond Road, (North) Philipsburg, on Friday, May 20, 2022, from 2 to 8 pm; and at the church on Saturday, from 9 am until the time of service.

A Panachida will be held at Verna’s home on Friday, beginning at 7 pm.

Interment will be in St. John the Baptist Orthodox Cemetery, Hawk Run.

Memorial contributions, in lieu of flowers, may be made in Verna’s memory to St. John the Baptist Orthodox Church, “Parking Lot Fund,” 53 Fulton Street, Hawk Run, Pa 16840.
