Rebecca “Erma” Bumbarger

Rebecca “Erma” Bumbarger, 84, of Philipsburg, died Monday, August 30, 2021, at Mount Nittany Medical Center, State College.

Erma was born on August 26, 1937, in Philipsburg, a daughter of the late Raymond Earl Hemphill, Sr. and Florence Pearl (Beals) Hemphill.

She was a graduate of the former Philipsburg High School.

Early in her working career, she was employed with the General Cigar plant, formerly located in (North) Philipsburg. However, she was employed for most of her career as a CNA with Mountain Laurel Health and Rehabilitation Center, Clearfield, up until her retirement.

Erma was a member of New Castle Community Church, RD Osceola Mills; where she was also a member of the church’s New Castle Angels group.

When she was younger, some of her favorite pastimes included working on crafts and Christmas decorations and playing UNO and Yahtzee with her family and friends. As she got older, she enjoyed working on and solving her word find / seek books and crossword puzzles.

Erma was preceded in death by her parents; one grandson, Irvin L. Hockenberry, III; and one brother, Raymond Earl “Hempy” Hemphill, Jr.

She is survived by two daughters, Angela J. Bires, of Philipsburg and Chris Hockenberry and her husband, Irvin L. Hockenberry, Jr., of Houtzdale; one son, Jesse B. Bumbarger, of Philipsburg; three grandchildren: Travis Bires, Michael Hockenberry and his wife, Lynn, and Nick Hockenberry and his companion, Kayla; one great-grandson, Carter Bires; one sister, Donna Z. Fagerty, Fort Worth, Texas; one brother, Ronald E. Hemphill, of Brogue, Pa.; and numerous other extended family members.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, September 3, 2021, at 3:30 pm, at the New Castle Community Church, 933 Red Schoolhouse Rd., Osceola Mills, with Pastor Joe Phillips, officiating.

A visitation will be held on Friday at the church from 2:30pm until the time of the service.

Interment will be in IOOF Cemetery, Brisbin.
